5 Reasons Why Your Business Needs Digital Marketing

Right, let's not dance around it. If your marketing strategy in 2023 still revolves around a leaflet drop in Gosforth and a bloke called Dave who "knows computers", we need to talk. Digital marketing isn't the future anymore, it's the boringly obvious present, and everyone except you seems to have noticed.

We're not here to scare you into submission with dramatic statistics about how Blockbuster didn't adapt. We're here because we genuinely think your business deserves better than shouting into the void and hoping a customer wanders past. So pour yourself a brew, and let's get into it.

1. Your Customers Live on Their Phones

Have a look around the Metro next time you're heading into town. Count the number of people staring at a phone versus the number reading a newspaper. That ratio is your marketing budget in a nutshell. Your customers are scrolling, searching, tapping and swiping from the moment they wake up to the moment they fall asleep clutching the thing like a teddy bear.

If you're not where they are, you don't exist. It really is that simple. Meeting customers on their preferred platforms isn't optional, it's the minimum entry requirement to still be trading in five years.

2. It's Measurable (Unlike That Billboard on the A1)

Traditional marketing is a lovely bit of guesswork. You pay thousands for a billboard and cross your fingers. Digital marketing, by contrast, tells you everything. Who clicked, when, from where, on what device, whether they bought, whether they bounced, and whether they'll ever come back.

  • Attribution: You know which channel actually drove the sale, not just which one had the prettiest advert.
  • Real-time data: Adjust campaigns on the fly instead of waiting three months for a depressing report.
  • ROI clarity: Every pound spent is trackable back to a pound earned, or not earned, which is equally useful.

3. The Playing Field Is Flat (Ish)

Here's the lovely bit. A small independent in Jesmond can absolutely outrank a national chain on Google if the strategy is sharp enough. Big budgets help, of course, but they don't guarantee anything. Clever beats rich surprisingly often in digital, which is why we enjoy it so much.

Good content, proper SEO and a genuinely useful website will humiliate a lazy competitor with ten times the spend. We've seen it happen. We've caused it to happen. Frequently.

4. Your Competitors Are Already Doing It

Open a private browser window and search for your main service plus "Newcastle". Go on. We'll wait. Who's ranking? Not you? Thought not. Those businesses at the top aren't smarter than you, they just started earlier and took it seriously.

Every day you delay is another day those competitors build authority, reviews, backlinks and customer relationships that you'll eventually have to claw back. The hole gets deeper the longer you ignore it.

5. It Actually Works

We've saved the least controversial for last. Digital marketing, done properly, generates leads, sales, bookings and loyal customers at a cost per acquisition that traditional channels can only sob into their pints about. When aligned with a proper strategy, the returns stop being impressive and start being a bit embarrassing for everyone else.

Look, we could go on. We could talk about personalisation, automation, retargeting, lifetime value and about forty other things that make marketers misty-eyed at conferences. But if five reasons haven't convinced you, seventeen probably won't either. Have a think, have another brew, and when you're ready, you know where we are.
