Here is a fun exercise. Open your Instagram in one browser tab and your website in another. Look at them side by side. Do they feel like the same business? Same tone? Same colours? Same offer? If the answer is anything short of a confident yes, you have got yourself a brand alignment problem, and you are bleeding customers through the cracks.
Why Alignment Matters
When someone discovers you on social and clicks through to your website, they are making a split-second judgement about whether you are legit. If the website looks, sounds and feels like a completely different business, their brain files you under "suspicious" and they bounce. You have effectively paid to bring them over, then actively scared them off.
Alignment is not about making everything identical. It is about coherence. The person they met on Instagram should be the same person they meet on your homepage. Same voice, same visual style, same values, same offer. It is not rocket science. It is just detail work that almost nobody does properly.
The Four Pillars of Alignment
- Visual identity: Colours, fonts, logo usage, photography style, iconography. All of it should match across channels.
- Tone of voice: Are you cheeky on Instagram and formal on your website? Pick a lane.
- Offer and positioning: The services you talk about on social should be the services featured on the site.
- User journey: A click from an Instagram post should land on a page that continues the conversation, not the generic homepage.
The Common Disconnect
We see the same pattern constantly. The social media is modern, warm, funny, visually cohesive. The website is three years older, slightly corporate, with different colours, stock photography and a tone that reads like it was translated from German. Why? Because the social got refreshed last year by a new hire and the website did not. Easy to fix, rarely prioritised.
A Practical Alignment Checklist
Pour yourself a brew and work through this:
- Brand guide: Do you have one? Is it followed? If not, fix this first.
- Colour palette: Same hex codes on web and social. No approximations.
- Fonts: The font on your website is probably not free on Canva. Pick versions that work on both.
- Photography: Either all stock, all custom, or a clearly defined mix. Not a chaotic jumble.
- Bio alignment: Your Instagram bio and your homepage hero should describe the same business in the same words.
- Link in bio: Deep-link to relevant pages, not the homepage. Use a sensible tool like your own website landing pages, not a third-party mess.
- Calls to action: Consistent CTAs across channels. "Book a call", "Shop the range", whatever it is.
Content Synergy
Alignment also means content that flows between channels. A blog post becomes a carousel. A reel becomes a landing page. A customer testimonial lives on the website and the Instagram feed. You get more mileage out of every piece, and your audience gets a consistent experience. Our piece on shareable content gets into this in more detail.
The Website Must Pull Its Weight
A tight social presence cannot compensate for a website that is slow, ugly or broken. If your social is sending traffic to a site that undermines it, you are pouring water into a colander. Our posts on website maintenance and SEO-friendly websites are the practical companion reading here.
Pixels and Plumbing
Alignment is also technical. Your Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, Google Analytics and any other tracking should be consistently installed across your site and your social ads so you can actually measure the journey. Too many businesses run social ads to a website that has no tracking, which is the marketing equivalent of firing arrows in the dark and guessing whether you hit anything.
An Alignment Audit in One Hour
Block an hour this week. Open your Instagram, your Facebook, your LinkedIn, your TikTok and your website on the same screen. Take screenshots of each homepage or main feed. Print them if you have a printer and you are fancy. Lay them out together. Where does the inconsistency jump out? That is your to-do list. Start fixing from the most visible item down.
