Email marketing: the unsexy goldmine

Here's a number that should bother you: email marketing returns £42 for every £1 spent. That's not a typo. It's not a 2003 stat. It's current, verified, and essentially ignored by every Newcastle business that's too busy trying to go viral on TikTok.

Email is unfashionable. That's exactly why it works.

Why email wins

  • Nobody owns your followers on Instagram except Instagram. Email subscribers are yours.
  • Open rates of 20–30%. Try getting that reach on a Facebook post.
  • No algorithm. You press send, people receive. That's the deal.
  • Intimate. People open emails one at a time, paying attention. They scroll social half-dressed, while watching TV, while cooking.

The three stages of email adulthood

Stage 1: Build a list (everyone skips this)

You cannot email nobody. Step one is having people to email. Add a signup form to your website. Offer a reason to subscribe — a free guide, a discount, a weekly tip, something. "Join our newsletter" is not a reason.

Target: 100 subscribers in month one. That's 3 a day. It's not hard if you ask.

Stage 2: Send consistent emails (everyone fails this)

Pick a schedule. Weekly is best. Biweekly works. Monthly is the floor. Sporadic is a crime.

The content mix: 70% useful stuff, 20% personal stories or behind-the-scenes, 10% "buy our thing." Never pure promotion. Nobody subscribes to sales pitches.

Stage 3: Convert subscribers (this is where it gets fun)

Segment. New subscribers get different emails than loyal customers. People who clicked on your pricing get the pricing follow-up. People who never click get a re-engagement email or get pruned.

Segmentation is the difference between "email marketing" and "spam."

Tool picks (without the affiliate links)

  • Brevo: Free up to 300/day. Our top pick for most local businesses.
  • Mailchimp: Free up to 500 contacts. Friendliest onboarding.
  • Klaviyo: If you're e-commerce, use this. Worth the price.
  • ConvertKit: If you're a creator or coach.

Start free. Upgrade when you hit limits, not before.

Your first 90 days

  • Month 1: Platform setup, signup form, welcome email. Get to 50 subscribers.
  • Month 2: Weekly newsletter. Write a 5-email welcome sequence. Hit 150 subscribers.
  • Month 3: Start segmenting. Write your first sales email. Hit 300 subscribers.

By month 6 you'll have a list worth real money. By month 12 it'll rival your paid ad spend for revenue.

The five mistakes

1. Only promotional emails. People leave.

2. Inconsistent schedule. People forget you.

3. Boring subject lines. People scroll past.

4. No call to action. People read and do nothing.

5. Not segmenting. People get irrelevant messages and unsubscribe.

Email setup in a week, not a month

We'll set up your email platform, design your signup form, write your welcome sequence, and launch your first campaign. One flat fee, ready to go.
