Google\'s changed the algorithm. Again. Every agency in Britain has sent you a panicked email about it. Ours included, probably.
Here\'s the thing though. Most of those emails are waffle. They\'re designed to scare you into a retainer, not to tell you what\'s actually happened.
So let\'s cut through it. Here\'s what Google\'s done in 2025, what it means for your business, and what you can safely ignore.
The AI Overviews Takeover
AI Overviews are now the default for most informational searches. That lovely blue link you used to rank for? It\'s buried under a chatbot summary now.
Click-through rates on position one have dropped by roughly 30% for queries that trigger an AI Overview. That\'s not a rumour. That\'s measurable, and it\'s painful.
What this actually means
- Informational content is harder to monetise: if Google answers the question, nobody clicks.
- Transactional queries still convert: "buy", "near me", "price" searches are largely unaffected.
- Brand searches are up: people who want you specifically still find you.
The Helpful Content Follow-Through
The helpful content system is now baked into the core algorithm. There\'s no separate update to track. It\'s just... how Google works now.
Sites with thin, AI-generated, or overly commercial content have been quietly demolished. Sites with genuine expertise have been rewarded. Shock.
Core Web Vitals: Still Here, Still Ignored
Everyone talks about Core Web Vitals. Almost nobody actually fixes them. If your site loads like it\'s 2008, Google is noticing. So are your users.
The new INP metric (Interaction to Next Paint) replaced FID last year and it\'s now being enforced properly. If your buttons feel laggy, you\'re losing rankings.
The fixes nobody bothers with
- Lazy-load everything below the fold: images, videos, third-party scripts.
- Kill the tracking bloat: do you really need seventeen analytics tools?
- Compress your images: WebP exists. Use it.
- Host fonts locally: Google Fonts adds a handshake you don\'t need.
Google Ads: The Quiet Squeeze
Ad costs are up again. Shocking, we know. Performance Max is still a black box, and Google really, really wants you to give them full automation.
Don\'t. Or at least, don\'t blindly. PMax works when you feed it good data and tight audience signals. It fails when you dump everything in and hope.

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. Google\'s been banging on about it for years, but in 2025 it\'s the difference between ranking and not.
If your "About" page is three lines and a stock photo, you\'re invisible. Real author bios, real credentials, real addresses, real phone numbers. It\'s not rocket science.
Local Search Has Quietly Evolved
Google Business Profile is doing more heavy lifting than ever. Reviews, photos, posts, Q&A, products - it\'s all factored in.
If you\'re a Newcastle business and your GBP hasn\'t been touched since 2023, you\'re handing customers to your competitors. That\'s not us scaremongering. That\'s just the truth.
Local quick wins
- Post weekly: offers, updates, events. GBP posts still move the needle.
- Respond to every review: yes, even the bad ones. Especially the bad ones.
- Upload photos monthly: Google rewards active profiles.
- Get your categories right: primary category matters most.
Shopping and Merchant Centre Changes
If you sell products online, the Merchant Centre Next migration is either already done or about to ruin your week. Feed quality is now a ranking factor, not just a warning.
Check your GTINs. Check your product titles. Check your images meet the 800x800 minimum. Boring, important.
What You Can Safely Ignore
Every other blog post screaming about "the end of SEO". SEO isn\'t dying. It\'s just maturing. The lazy tactics are dying. Good riddance.
Also ignore: Twitter threads claiming secret ranking factors, agencies selling "AI-proof SEO" packages, and anyone who uses the phrase "Google\'s inner circle".
What to Do This Month
- Audit your top 10 pages: are they genuinely helpful or just keyword-stuffed?
- Check your Core Web Vitals: Search Console tells you for free.
- Review your ad accounts: pause anything with a CPA over your tolerance.
- Update your Google Business Profile: ten minutes, massive impact.
The Honest Bit
Algorithm updates are a fact of life. Panicking doesn\'t help. Paying a panicked agency helps even less. What works is a solid foundation: good content, fast site, honest SEO, tight ads.
